The path to parenthood isn’t always as simple and fast as expected. Lots of Irish couples have difficulties with naturally conceiving, but fortunately, there are a wide range of fertility treatments that can help maximise the chances of having a baby. From IVF to Ovulation induction, there are lots of options available if you’re experiencing fertility issues.

To make things easier, the team at Sims IVF has put together this short post detailing a number of common fertility treatments - to view a list of all treatments, please visit our website. Below, read on to learn more; if you’d like to discuss your options with a specialist, then please contact us via the details mentioned at the bottom.

Ovulation Induction

This type of fertility treatment involves using medications to promote the development of one or more mature follicles in a woman’s ovaries. It is suitable for women that are experiencing ovulatory problems like irregular cycles or anovulation. Essentially, your ovaries are stimulated with an oral medication or hormone injections. Following this a hCG injection is performed to induce ovulation after the ovulation induction cycles. Then, timed sexual intercourse can occur or Intrauterine Insemination can be performed at a suitable time.

IUI or Artificial Insemination

IUI (Intrauterine insemination) or AI (Artificial insemination) consists of an injection of a prepared sperm sample from a partner or donor into the woman’s uterine cavity near the time of ovulation. IUI is recommended for women who have working fallopian tubes, and men with a normal semen analysis. This type of fertility treatment is really effective - success rates are typically around 10-15% per cycle provided the man’s sperm and woman’s tubes are all healthy.

IVF

IVF, or In-vitro fertilisation, refers to fertilisation in glass. It is a common process involving a woman’s eggs being fertilised in a laboratory. Following this, the resulting embryos are then moved back into the uterus after a few days have passed. IVF treatment success rates are on average around 28%, and it’s suited to women who have absent, blocked or damaged fallopian tubes.

ICSI

ICSI (Intracytoplasmic sperm injection) is like standard IVF in the way that gametes are gathered from each partner. The difference is that ICSI uses another method of achieving fertilisation. ICSI involves picking up a single sperm with a fine glass needle and injecting it into each egg; it takes place in a laboratory by qualified embryologists using cutting-edge equipment.

Donor Program

The donor program treatment helps anyone who requires donor gametes in order to have a baby. You can use ‘known donor eggs’ from a family member or friend; likewise, you can use donor sperm too. For more details on donor programs, visit the Sims IVF website today.
