PCOS Awareness Month at Sims IVF
PCOS Awareness Month
Every September, the world comes together to shine a light on Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) - a condition that affects up to 10 - 20% of people in Ireland. While it’s one of the most common causes of infertility, it’s also one of the most misunderstood.
At Sims IVF, we believe that knowledge is power. By raising awareness during PCOS Awareness Month, we hope to empower women and couples to better understand their bodies, their fertility, and the options available to them.
What is PCOS?
PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) is a hormonal condition that can affect your menstrual cycle, fertility, and overall health. Common signs include:
- Irregular or absent periods
- Difficulty ovulating
- Excess hair growth or acne due to higher levels of androgens (male hormones)
- Insulin resistance, which can make weight management challenging
- Enlarged ovaries that may show multiple small follicles on ultrasound
- Infertility
Not everyone will experience all these symptoms as PCOS can look very different from one woman to the next, which is why a personalised approach to your fertility journey is key.
PCOS and Fertility -
It’s true that PCOS can make it harder to conceive naturally, but it doesn’t mean you can’t have a baby. At Sims IVF, we work with many women each year who have PCOS, helping them find the best pathway to parenthood.
Here’s how we support you:
- Ovulation tracking – Simple blood tests and ultrasound scans help us understand your cycle.
- Ovulation induction – Medications can help trigger or regulate ovulation, often making conception possible without more complex treatments.
- IVF support when needed – For those who don’t respond to initial treatments, a carefully tailored IVF plan can make all the difference.
Every journey is unique, but with the right support, PCOS does not have to be a barrier to parenthood.
If you’ve been trying to conceive for 12 months (or 6 months if you’re over 35), it’s a good idea to speak with a fertility specialist.
