October 2023: Sims IVF has announced a new partnership with the School of Nursing & Midwifery in Trinity College Dublin (TCD). Through the partnership, Sims IVF will provide official training for student midwives attending TCD.

The training programme will involve a 1-week primary care placement for students enrolled in the BSc in Midwifery course. Students will gain valuable exposure working alongside the experienced nursing team across three sites, led by the nurse managers. The development of this programme was spearheaded by Sims IVF’s Group Clinic Director, Mikey O’ Brien, a former TCD student and nurse and midwife for over twenty years, with the past seven years focused solely on fertility.

This primary care placement aims to fill a niche in the Irish education environment and to introduce midwifery students to the discipline of fertility early in their careers. The introduction is timely due to the limited amount of trained fertility nurses in Ireland. At present, Sims IVF operates a two-year training programme for Registered Nurses (RN), Registered Midwives (RM) and dual qualified RN/RM, with most staff coming from acute or maternity hospitals.

Speaking on the partnership, Mikey O’ Brien, Group Clinic Director at Sims IVF said:

“Training is the foundation of everything we do at Sims IVF and we are delighted to join forces with the School of Nursing & Midwifery in Trinity College Dublin. We want the students of Ireland to have the opportunity to gain exposure to fertility and for the first time students will be able to decide if fertility nursing is something they enjoy before graduating. As a former student of TCD, I am delighted to be involved in training the next generation of fertility experts.”
